Chania International Airport, also named Ioannis Daskalogiannis, is an international airport located near Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete, serving the city of Chania. It is named after Ioannis Daskalogiannis, a Cretan rebel against Ottoman rule in the 18th century and is a joint civil - military airport. Chania airport is one of two international airports on the island of Crete, the other being Heraklion. Passenger throughput is approximately 1.4 million per year. The Chania International Airport is located about 14 kilometers to the east of Chania on the peninsula which partially surrounds Souda Bay. Signs on the main coastal roads will indicate the "Aerodromio" just after you pass Souda Bay. As Chania Airport does directly serve international flights, there is a full customs inspections service operating. Chania Airport hosts domestic flights to and from Athens, Thessaloniki and other Greek airports. From April to early November there are also many direct charter flights to Chania Airport from Britain, Germany, Scandinavia and other European coutrues.
